Best Period
Located in the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, at the connection of
the Meditarrean and the Oceanic influence. The region takes all the
swells from NW and SW of the Northern Atlantic that create good quality
waves with a regular size.
In winter, waves go around 2 meters up to 5
meters. The summer never remains without any 1.50 meters waves. The
South Coast also gets nice swells because it is sheltered from the wind.
WINDS & TIDES :
Winds
from St Vincent Point are quite unforeseeable. Oriented SW in winter,
they sometimes strongly blow offshore, rising waves with power. The
South “Levant” quells as fast as it rises. The N/NW “Nortada” blows from
April to September. From October to December, they are often offshore
and give great conditions.
Rocky bottoms with some fastidious launching in the water.
The
Gulf Stream’s non-influence give a water temperature at 21°C max in
August and 15° to 17°C the rest of the year. An integral 3/2mm wetsuit
is sufficient, springsuit and shorts in summer.
Spots
Praïa de Odeiceixe : A sweet beachbreak sheltered from the winds by the cliffs.
Cogumelo : Splendid peak coming from a big rock and strongly breaking as far as the inside.
Malhao : Might be ultra consistent – transparent water and nice surf – located in the Villa Nova zone.
Monte Clerigo : A pretty beach 40 km North of Sagres. Handles well the heavy swell in some sand-banks.
Arrigana : A shifting spot – in heavy swell, a right that works from 2 meters and can end up explosive (watch out for the rocks!) as high as 4 meters. For confirmed surfers – in the middle of the bay, a little tubular left in small swell.
Carrapateira : Sand-banks to select – Can turn out fantastic – not many people in the water and sufficiently sheltered from the wind.
Amado : A solid spot at the end of a soil track. Sheltered from the Northern wind.
Cordana : Isolated beach. Blend of sand barrels and rocky plates. Works well in summer and fall – winter winds sweeping away too much the spots – nice lefts to explore.
Belixe : Near Sagres – good swell – might be hollow and powerful – watch out for locals and the army of bodyboarders rolling down the tubes.
Tonel : Have to take the swell up North to work like Belixe.
Maratera : Preserved spot close to downtown – Works only if Tonel has too much…
Zavial : clear water as crystal, nice right tubes on a sandy and rocky bottom – works in heavy swell.
Rocha Negra : A famous spot in Portugal – in the West of Lagos – works as far as 2 meters – nice left tubes – lots of people in the water.
Lagos : All around the city, various quality beachbreaks to explore by “Levant”.
Weather / Temperature
Air temperature : 28°C (Summer) / 15°C (Winter)
Water temperature : 20°C (Summer) / 17°C (Winter)
Surf Story
For a long time, it was the first surftrip when we were broke and we knew that Portugal was an authentic and friendly country where the quality of the waves was amazing.
Okay, the fresh water even in summer and the size of the peaks in winter did not discourage anyone as Peniche and Carrapateira, where the hollow tubes near Ericeira bring happiness.
A great European surfing country, where the level is remarkable and where we come back having the feeling we went so far away.
History
A narrow strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, highly desired by the Moors and the Castile Kingdom, the Portuguese territory was built throughout the centuries. As soon as the 15th century, during the discovery era, the country found its expansion.
From its conquests to the colonization will be emerging a unique culture which can be found nowadays in the wealthy architectures, monuments and museums.
Not a lot of countries have so many cultural beauty spots of the world heritage classified by the UNESCO.
Geography
Located on the Atlantic front of the Iberian Peninsula, in the West of Spain, Portugal is one of the smallest European countries: it is expanding 560 km from North to South and only 220 km from East to West. It only has an earthly frontier: Spain.
The Tage which is running from Northeast to Southwest and flowing into the Atlantic in Lisbon divides the country in two parts.
A mountainous chain, the Serra da Estrela is the highest point in Torre (1993 m). The North and the Centre are the most populated regions. The low plateau of Alentejo in the South of the Tage, is extending back to back to the mountainous spur of Algarve.
Vineyards, corn, potato and rye prevail in the North whereas the regions of the Centre and the South, more arid, are dedicated to the olive-tree, the cork-oak, the orange-tree, the fig-tree and the almond-tree – stunning in spring when the trees are in blossom.
