Happy Day Surf Camp is a team of experienced surfers with about 30 years of surf activity, between surf passion, competition and coaching.
We have travelled all around the world looking for waves and we know what a surf tourist needs.
Knowing all the secret spots is a key point to have the best experience, mainly when the time is limited. That is why we chose this region to make our offer.

The Happy Day Surf camp is established in the region of Porto, place where all the team members are originary. We include a surf school and accommodation facilities. Our concept includes mixes surf, culture and nightlife in the city. Discovering the secrets of the city that gave name to the country, with almost one thousand years of history will help you to enter this particular kind of culture, relax, have fun and surf as much as you want in the most natural idyllic spots of Europe’s west coast.

 This region, around Oporto offers perfect conditions to learn to surf, good weather, desert beaches, good food, cultural density and smooth nightlife. One of the problems that we live actually in surfing are the busy surf spots. Here are the less crowded beaches in Europe, ready to the learning and practice of surf without limitations.
Happy day surf camp is located in the center of Porto, Portugal. Although we have surf spots 10 min from the accommodation, usually we prefer to take our guests to surf spots that are 20 to 30 min by car. Beaches there are more pretty and with very few people.

Besides, we are located in the city of Portugal with more history and try to show the Portuguese culture, monuments, food, nightlife… We do everything that besides learning how to surf makes a happy week !

In the free time, the happy day surf camp can organize several activities such as dinners, Oporto guided tours (by walk, bus, segway or helicopter), nightlife guided tour, visit to the Oporto wine cellars, attendance to music concerts, theatre, visit to museums, monuments, expositions.
Also access to other sports like yoga, canoeing, paintball, etc.

You can stay in a hotel or hostel in the city center (free transfer to the beach takes about 15 min) or in a more quiet area near the beach.

Packages

SURF COURSES AND ACTIVITIES  :
Our surf courses are provided by certified surf instructors. The maximum number of guests by class is 8 per each instructor.

The course includes 5 days of instruction with two surf classes per day.
Each class takes about 1h 30 min. The classes happen in the best moment of the day, chosen in a way so guests can enjoy the top conditions for surfing. Sometimes the two classes of the day can have a big interval or only a thirty minutes break so guests can rest for a while, drink water, etc.

All classes are in the region of Porto (an area of about 30 km north or south). The surf school transport picks guests up at the accommodation and takes to the beach, in the afternoon brings people back to the accommodation when the classes are over. Beaches are chosen according to the sea conditions and all the class has the instruction in the same beach.
The classes are included in the surf packages. Portuguese, English, Spanish and German are spoken by the instructors. Surf materials All the class material is for beginners and is adapted to the person profile and includes wetsuit and surfboard. Participants are encouraged to take food and drinks to eat during the day.

Best Period

TIMES & CONDITIONS :
Located in the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, at the connection of the Meditarrean and the Oceanic influence. The region takes all the swells from NW and SW of the Northern Atlantic that create good quality waves with a regular size.
In winter, waves go around 2 meters up to 5 meters. The summer never remains without any 1.50 meters waves. The South Coast also gets nice swells because it is sheltered from the wind.

WINDS & TIDES :
Winds from St Vincent Point are quite unforeseeable. Oriented SW in winter, they sometimes strongly blow offshore, rising waves with power. The South “Levant” quells as fast as it rises. The N/NW “Nortada” blows from April to September. From October to December, they are often offshore and give great conditions.
Rocky bottoms with some fastidious launching in the water.The Gulf Stream’s non-influence give a water temperature at 21°C max in August and 15° to 17°C the rest of the year. An integral 3/2mm wetsuit is sufficient, springsuit and shorts in summer.

Teach how to surf with joy!!
Help people to understand that besides all the technique that there is in surf there is also a very important part: a sport done in the middle of nature where we slide standing in the sea, with no engine and that we take part from the nature in a perfect connection men-nature. Making our guests feel this will turn the learning process much more easy and fluid.

FORMALITIES :
For the French nationals, you need a valid ID or a Passport, even if your passport is expired (from less than 5 years).

LANGUAGE :
Portuguese. French is frequently spoken in hotels and shops.

TIME DIFFERENCE :
GMT -1 hour in winter and summer.

WEATHER :
Temperate and oceanic climate with an average temperature of 18° in winter and 24° in summer.
However, a slight difference can be noticed when you are in the Northern coast and in heights where the climate is more fresh and humid.

DRIVING CONDITIONS :
A valid national driver’s license. The driving side is the right side of the road, the seatbelt is compulsory.

ENVIRONEMENT :
The fact that Madeira has good and big waves has been kept in silence for a long time. As the low-cost flights have taken a while to lower the plane tickets prices, Madeira has only seen a few surfers. Most of them are Portuguese and French.
