Panama swells are generated from the southern hemisphere from 190 to 230 degree.
It has a very predictable climate with an average air temperature of (32 ° C - 89 F) and a water temperature of ( 28 ° C - 82 F). The dry season or summer, offers clear skies and isolated trade winds from the northeast (Offshore) winds all day and night.

Surf Story

Hola gringo! If you pursue your surf trip that began in Mexico, went on in Nicaragua through Costa Rica, you will really have a lot of fun in Panama. Nice and Latino atmosphere. Pretty waves without too many Americans: Playa Serena, Playa Malibu, about ten kilometres from the capital near Rio Mar in the Gulf of Panama. But you can head along the coast to some remote places with no crowds.
Ten or so empty spots in some places to discover during your trip. To get used to the relaxed and original mood of South America…

1510 – The Spanish settled in the river’s mouth of Rio Chagres on the Caribbean coast.Panama becomes the starting point of Peru’s colonization.
At the end of the 19th century, the gold rush in California engenders the building of the railroad Colon-Panama by the United States.
1914 – Completion of the Panama Canal.
1997 – Cancelling of Panama’s army which is replaced by a civil police. Two years later, a woman Mireya Moscoso is elected President. On December 31st, the Canal returns to Panama after 85 years under North America’s domination.

Panama’s isthmus forms the umbilical cord connecting South America to Central America.
Enclosed in the West by Costa Rica, in the East by Colombia, the country is only 50 km wide.
On the contrary, its Northern coast extends 1 160km along the Caribbean Sea and its Southern coast spreads 1 690 km near the Pacific Ocean.
The famous Panama Canal crosses the territory in the middle, demarcating an East region and a West one.

Hundreds islands dot the Caribbean coast, among them San Blas and Bocas del Toro archipelagos.Yet, Coiba island and Las Perlas in the Pacific own the best scuba diving and fishing spots. Both coastal plains open out on both sides of the mountainous land which constitutes Panama’s backbone. It culminates 3 475 m with Baru (volcano).

For French nationals: a valid passport. A fee of 20 Balboa (PAB) is required for anyone leaving the Republic of Panama by plane. This tax must be paid when you leave, at the airport when you book your seats. Do not forget to have this amount of money in cash because credit cards are not accepted.
The national capital is Panama City.

The official language is Spanish. English is the second current language.

The health conditions are satisfactory. Because of the weather, you need to have a strict hygiene and to watch over the food conservation. The water is drinkable in Panama City, Colon and David. In the inside lands, it is advised to drink water bottles.
Vaccines : no vaccine is required when you enter Panama. Yet, a vaccine against the yellow fever is recommended by the sanitary authorities.
Malaria: only Darien (region of Colombia’s border) which should be avoided for safety reasons and the coastal region of San Blas (not the archipelago though) are affected by malaria: it is recommended to take chloroquine.

-6 hours in winter, -7 hours in summer.

Tropical climate. There are two seasons :
The dry season : from January to mid-April.
The wet season : from mid-April to December.
The rain falls more on the mountainous regions of the Caribbean coast than in the Pacific shore where most of the population is. The regions of the plains know high temperatures (21°-32°C) but it is cooler than in heights (10°-18°C). There is not much change during the year.

The road network system is quite good on the major axis.
A 4X4 is recommended to drive on secondary roads. Busses connect the main rural cities as well as Costa Rica.
On the opposite way, the Pan-American road ends up before Colombia’s border. This country can only be accessible by plane or boat.
Gas supplying is properly and regularly guaranteed in the whole territory.
In case of accident, the vehicle has to remain where it is until a police establishment is done. A judgement is usually done by the Transportation Department. Insurance for individual vehicles is not compulsory. Driving in Panama, especially in the capital is rather dangerous because people do not respect the road signs.

American outlets – 110 V.

The national currency is Balboa. As the national bank does not make any bills anymore, US dollars are used.
1 Balboa = 1 Dollar US.
