Activities
The word Mentawai has come to senses of
most adventurous surfer spreading around the globe. Some become myth,
some become the endless story tell passes to every persons who has the
interest in having the memorable memories, some become legend.
We have the mission to
provide a full service through sustainable tourism and integration with
the indigenous people of the island. We also provide trekking trip
through the jungle of Siberut island and tailor made surf trip around
Siberut islands, spent
the night with the native speaker of Mentawai islands.
TREKKING :
The island of Siberut is inhabited by
the Mentawai people, one of the pure indigenous Indonesian societies.
They have had very little contact with the outside world and so have
continued to live a fairly primitive form of life compare with the life
standard of the present day.
The Mentawaians live in the jungle
villages and have to rely on the jungle for their food, clothing and
medicine. On our trek we will join the Mentawaians on their daily trip
to jungle to see how they make their life, how they gather their foods,
clothes, medicines, poisons for their primitive weapons like spears and
arrows, learn the differences of the trees, plants, and how they use
their primitive equipments.
Trekking through the wet and muddy
Mentawai jungle is truly a once in a lifetime experience, Imagine swims
on the tropical river, swings on vines, soaked in mud baths and sings
the traditional songs along the way. Don't worry it’s not too strenuous
so you don't have to be too fit to trek the Mentawai jungles !
...
The more you try to interact and
communicate with the locals, the more you will learn and the more
satisfaction you will get.
One of the most important thing to remember when trekking in Siberut is : what you give is what you get…
Even though there maybe a language barrier at
the first, don't be hesitate to communicate with other ways like hand
signs, songs or anything understandable. Once you get in touch with
them, they will take you to explore their environments, their uma (home), their
jungle and you'll never know what you will find ! You will be surprised
to know that the Mentawaians are very responsive and extremely friendly.

Best Period
The Mentawai Islands offer some of the
best surf to be found anywhere on earth.
These islands attract swells
all year round with the most consistent season generally being between
March and November. Waves vary in size from 2 to 12 foot with the
average wave height being about 6 foot.
This region can also get big
swells with up to 16 feet.
These islands are blessed with some of the
most consistent, user friendly surf in the world. From
a-walk-in-the-park beginner waves to the suicide waves only the
real-pro could tackle. There's something for everyone here !
Even today you still have the
opportunity to surf not crowded waves as this area keeps producing
quality line ups which are scattered amongst a vast array of reefs,
point breaks and secluded bays.
On a world scale, the Mentawai Islands
has a 91% chance of scoring epic waves, compared with Hawaii (76%) and
Australia around 80%.
Yes, Mentawai is a surfers' paradise.
There's a LOT of surf spot all around these islands with a thousand waves everyday.
Some of the waves have names given by
the first surfers who ride it. And usually they name the waves by the
characteristics of the waves, so here we got bankvault, lances,
thunder, hollow tree and many more.
Here are some of it from north to south Mentawai islands. These are the main breaks with many other spots available in between.
In the Mentawai Islands, the swell unrolls around the four main islands and there are many spots that can be reached closer by boat. Most of the spots have 2 names due to the disagreement of the boat companies.
WINDS & TIDES
Winds are rather weak, NW or SE. The spots are often glassy and the trick is to find the good wind and tide timing with a specific study of the marine weather report maps.
There is always going to be an offshore or flat spot…
The surfing experience required is quite high and the spots break on a sharp-edged coral. Bring boots, a hood during the season, a fixing kit, and spare fins. A choice of 2 surfboards is often useful for the heavy swells.
Not much tide, but it does not affect most of the spots of little deep water. During the season, there is many people in the water. You need to get there early and leave the spots before the next surfers. Australian surfers are the first customers of the area.
Spots Type
Spots
Nipussi - E Bay : South of the main island Siberut. In W swell, rights and lefts fairly consistent.
Bankvaults : Hollow and fast right – for trained surfers.
4 Bobs : Located on one of the small islands of the strait. In the South of Siberut, quite easy and quality wave unrolling on a lagoon. Mainly a right with a short barrel off the takeoff,
but quickly dies off into the channel. There’s an even shorter left,
but usualy not worth the effort.
Burgerworld
:
This is a mushy pointbreak-like righthander. Can offer
barrels at times, but usually long rippable walls with many cutback
sections.
Pit Stops
:
This is the right off the peak at E-Bay. Usually a
playful right that can offer some cover-ups off the take-off, but
mostly a high performance waves with air sections at the end. Ends in a
sandy channel.
Hideaways
: A very hollow left that can be shalow at times. It
comes out of deep water, then unloads on a shallow section of reef
before barreling towards the channel. Can get very shallow at low
tides.
No Kanduis
: A long barrelling left that wraps around a small
island. Usually very sectiony, but can line up on the largest of
swells. Many barrels on offer, but usually only makeable for one or
two sections before clsing out and racing down the line.
Rifles : one of the best waves in the Mentawai. A very long
righthander that wraps around the other side of the same island as No
Kanduis. Rarely makeable from start to finish, but even just from
section to section you can get rides up to 100 meters or longer. Nice
and hollow once it’s a few feet overhead, but usually more sectiony
at smaller sizes.

Surf Story
The Mentawai Islands were discovered several years ago by Australian surfers who were visiting Nias Island in the neighbour archipelago and were exploring the island by boat.
Becoming the indispensable trip where the waves can be reached by the sea, the spots are made of tubular, consistent and regular waves. Today they are famous and they supply the surfing videos of your favourite surfshop…
Located North of Sumatra Island, on the West coast, they offer an amazing boat trip within comfortable conditions for a great quality surfing.
History
The Mentawai Islands are part of Indonesia and their history rests upon Indonesia’s.
Like a pearl necklace on a coral bottom, the Indonesian archipelago shells its 13 000 islands between Asia and the Pacific Ocean. For a long time, it conjured up prosperity and opulence: it has already been a thousand years that the ships coming from China, attracted by the great smells of sandal wood and beeswax, ventured the islands…
Unlimited reservation of natural resources, fascinating melting-pot of mysterious cultures, Indonesia soon became an elected land for Westerners in quest of adventures.
Nowadays, the islands of Bali, Lombok or Sumba attract visitors but the tourist industry has not reached the whole country.
The archipelago provides, still today, a unique world playground for adventures.
Millennial traditions of Papuan tribes, multiform craftsmen, powerful volcanoes, coral reefs, huge jungles, unusual monitor lizards, giant butterflies, unsurfed waves…
Geography
The Mentwai Islands archipelago is located NW of the large island of Sumatra.
They constitute four main islands: Siberut, Sipura, Pagai Utara, Pagai Selatan and Sibigan and Bitojat islets, where most spots are located.
More in the South and in the East, Indonesia is composed of Java Island, with its Southern G Land foreland, Bali and the huge archipelago of Sunda Islands: Nusa Lembongan, very close to Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Timor, Komodo and its giant monitor lizards, Sumba and its amazing charm.
In the upper part, there is Kalimantan Island (Borneo) whose Northern part belongs to Malaysia.Next to it, Sulawesi Island (Celebes) with its large bays looking like a butterfly from the sky.
More in the East, more and more islands, like the famous Maluku Islands and its rare spices…and finally Western New Guinea (Irian Jaya) with its border not really natural : a straight line that splits the island in two with Papua New Guinea.
