Other Services
Once you have made a booking with us, we just need to know your
arrival time at Padang International Airport so we can arrange your
transfer pick up.
Your trip starts with us in Padang, but you need to do your airline
reservations to make it on time for the speedboat transfer to the
island, which leaves around 1 pm the day of departure.
Knowing this, you should give yourself more than 3 hours, so you
should be getting a plane that gets to Padang no later than 10 am. Some guests prefer to arrive the day before and stay the night in Padang in which case we will arrange your hotel for you.
Depending on where you are coming from (Australia, Indonesia,
America, Europe…) you would be arranging your trip differently. Our
guests will be usually coming through Jakarta to Padang or Kuala Lumpur
to Padang (Air Asia).
Once in at the Airport in Padang, our main driver will be there to take you to our meeting point and join the rest of the group.
Usually we use a Hotel lobby where you can relax, and do your last things before you come to the island.
Around 1 pm we go to the harbor, which is only 5 minutes from the
metting point and we depart for Botik on our chartered speedboat.
It is a 4 to 5 hour ride to the Island of Botik on board the speedboat.
Once here at our Resort, after a brief welcome, you will be accommodated in your new paradise home for the next 11 nights…
Activities
We have two speedboats for our different activities at each time.
These
boats are long hand-made mentawaian canoes designed by locals for the
weather and conditions in the area.
Other Activities
Lodging
Botik Resort has three private bungalows, built in the traditional
Mentawai style homes by local carpenters. Each one is approximately 100
square meters and has been designed to sleep four people.
Large rooms
and a lot of space for maximum comfort are a main priority to us.
These
bungalows are approximately 50 meters from our main Restaurant building
situated right on the beach.
Meal Plan
We serve lunch between 11 am and 2 pm ; depending on what time we get
back from the surf. Sometimes we stay out all day surfing when
conditions are great !
We serve a snack usually before lunch with
assorted fruits (mango, bananas, pineapples, watermelon, papayas…) then a
Delicious western or Indonesian menu that consists in meat (chicken,
fresh fish, beef…) vegetables and carbohydrates (potatoes, pasta, rice,
noodles…), all served with cold drinks, juices and water.
Mexican,
italian and spanish food are some of our favorites such as pizzas,
burgers, curries, BBQ fish, lamb and chicken, salads with all dressings…
Beers and spirits can be purchased at the bar.
We get together quite a lot around this area to share Barbeques, drinks and have fires at night on the beach…
Sport Services
Depending on winds, tides and swell directions we cruise on our speedboats looking for the best conditions.
The proximity of our resort to all these breaks and the short
distance in between them make it possible for us to explore several
breaks in very little time.
Best Period
If you are looking for calm periods and easy crowds,
we recommend you book with us in March, April, October or November,
even though in our peak season (May to September) there is also plenty
of options for smaller and easier waves. Remember that even in these
periods you can expect also to have bigger and powerful ocean swells.
If you are looking for powerful waves over 6 feet,
then you are on to book anytime from April to September, but even in
these months there are smaller days and in the bigger days, there are
still plenty of spots to surf smaller and mellower waves inside our
bays.
No matter when you book, you will find no other place in the
world with the consistency of our area. We have waves everyday from
March until November from shoulder high to 12 feet, it is a matter of
finding the best spots for the conditions, and that is our job.
Spots Type
For Sumatra Island and its Northern archipelagos, Banyaks, Hinakos, Simaulue, Nias, Telos et Mentawai, the depression swells of the Indian Ocean generate consistent 1.50 to 4 meters waves during the great season, from March to November and from 1 to 2 meters the rest of the year.
In the Mentawai Islands, the swell unrolls around the four main islands and there are many spots that can be reached closer by boat. Most of the spots have 2 names due to the disagreement of the boat companies. WINDS & TIDES
Winds are rather weak, NW or SE. The spots are often glassy and the trick is to find the good wind and tide timing with a specific study of the marine weather report maps.
There is always going to be an offshore or flat spot…
The surfing experience required is quite high and the spots break on a sharp-edged coral. Bring boots, a hood during the season, a fixing kit, and spare fins. A choice of 2 surfboards is often useful for the heavy swells.
Not much tide, but it does not affect most of the spots of little deep water. During the season, there is many people in the water. You need to get there early and leave the spots before the next surfers. Australian surfers are the first customers of the area.
Spots
SOUTHERN PLAYGROUNDS :
A Frame : One of the most consistent lefts of the Mentawais. This wave gets better as it gets bigger. Sometimes it can go all the way to the inside bowl
No Kanduis : A long barrelling left that wraps around a small island. Usually very sectiony, but can line up on the largest of swells. Many barrels on offer, but usually only makeable for one or two sections before clsing out and racing down the line.
4 Bobs : Located on one of the small islands of the strait. In the South of Siberut, quite easy and quality wave unrolling on a lagoon.
Rifles : one of the best waves in the Mentawai. A very long righthander that wraps around the other side of the same island as No Kanduis. Rarely makeable from start to finish, but even just from section to section you can get rides up to 100 meters or longer. Nice and hollow once it’s a few feet overhead, but usually more sectiony at smaller sizes.
Pistols : About six hundred meters further down from the Riffles take off zone; this beautiful right-hander wave puts you straight from the take off into a very fun barrel section
NORTHERN PLAYGROUNDS :
Hideaways : A very hollow left that can be shalow at times. It comes out of deep water, then unloads on a shallow section of reef before barreling towards the channel. Can get very shallow at low tides.
Bankvaults : Hollow and fast right – for trained surfers.
Nipussi - E Bay : South of the main island Siberut. In W swell, rights and lefts fairly consistent.
Pit Stops : This is the right off the peak at E-Bay. Usually a playful right that can offer some cover-ups off the take-off, but mostly a high performance waves with air sections at the end. Ends in a sandy channel.
Burgerworld :This beautiful right-hander is one of our options in the lower seasons, when the rest of the waves are too small to surf. The island (Kroniki) is one of the most amazing spots in the area
Weather / Temperature
Air temperature : 29°C (Summer) / 27°C (Winter)
Water temperature : 25°C (Summer) / 24°C (Winter)
Surf Story
he Mentawai Islands were discovered several years ago by Australian surfers who were visiting Nias Island in the neighbour archipelago and were exploring the island by boat.
Becoming the indispensable trip where the waves can be reached by the sea, the spots are made of tubular, consistent and regular waves. Today they are famous and they supply the surfing videos of your favourite surfshop…
Located North of Sumatra Island, on the West coast, they offer an amazing boat trip within comfortable conditions for a great quality surfing.
History
The Mentawai Islands are part of Indonesia and their history rests upon Indonesia’s.
Like a pearl necklace on a coral bottom, the Indonesian archipelago shells its 13 000 islands between Asia and the Pacific Ocean. For a long time, it conjured up prosperity and opulence: it has already been a thousand years that the ships coming from China, attracted by the great smells of sandal wood and beeswax, ventured the islands…
Unlimited reservation of natural resources, fascinating melting-pot of mysterious cultures, Indonesia soon became an elected land for Westerners in quest of adventures.
Nowadays, the islands of Bali, Lombok or Sumba attract visitors but the tourist industry has not reached the whole country.
The archipelago provides, still today, a unique world playground for adventures.
Millennial traditions of Papuan tribes, multiform craftsmen, powerful volcanoes, coral reefs, huge jungles, unusual monitor lizards, giant butterflies, unsurfed waves…
Geography
The Mentwai Islands archipelago is located NW of the large island of Sumatra.
They constitute four main islands: Siberut, Sipura, Pagai Utara, Pagai Selatan and Sibigan and Bitojat islets, where most spots are located.
More in the South and in the East, Indonesia is composed of Java Island, with its Southern G Land foreland, Bali and the huge archipelago of Sunda Islands: Nusa Lembongan, very close to Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Timor, Komodo and its giant monitor lizards, Sumba and its amazing charm.
In the upper part, there is Kalimantan Island (Borneo) whose Northern part belongs to Malaysia.Next to it, Sulawesi Island (Celebes) with its large bays looking like a butterfly from the sky.
More in the East, more and more islands, like the famous Maluku Islands and its rare spices…and finally Western New Guinea (Irian Jaya) with its border not really natural: a straight line that splits the island in two with Papua New Guinea.

Indonesia over thrusts the equator between the Indian Ocean in the West and the Pacific Ocean in the East. Its climate is then humid and warm.

Usually, the average temperature for the year goes between 22° and 35°C, and the humidity rate can reach 75%. In January-February, the rains are the most abundant.
The best season to visit and surf in Indonesia is from May to October.

Currency :
The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
Bring travellers’ checks if possible, delivered by a well-known bank company and some hundreds of USD bills.

You will be able to easily exchange your currencies (the US dollar is the most common currency) in Padang or other major cities.
Indonesian banks usually do not charge and the best rates are in Jakarta.
Credit cards will be useful for your important purchases. Giving a tip is not a common thing to do but is advised for the crew on board. In whole Indonesia, chaffering is common.
“Bemo” drivers are known for their ability to raise the prices for Westerners. However, do not try to reach constantly the local rate…you would miss the boat return or a great surf session !
