We are minutes from Messanges and Moliets beach which, along with all the other beautiful beaches in the area, have the best surf spots.
Your hosts, Troy (English) and Nelly (French), ensure that ,with their lifetime’s local knowledge of the area,  the cuisine, and the surf, that you are in good hands at The Secret Spot lodge with your family or your friends.

Lodging

A  hundred year old farm house  recently renovated to a high standard, using carefully handpicked local products.
We have five bedrooms, four bathrooms, large lounge area and dining room.
We can accommodates twelve people. We have a bunkbed room, double rooms,  a family ensuite room, and  a luxury family room of 30msq (inc en-suite).
It is one of the two upstairs bedrooms. It has a private sun –terrace overlooking the pool and a luxurious en-suite bathroom, with shower & bath .The bed is a queen size (180 x 200 cm) , and we have  3 single beds that we can put in at an extra charge. The maximum occupancy of this room is 5. Babies under 2 go free of charge and we provide as many cots as are needed. All rooms come with bedding and shower towels.
Leading out from the lounge,  there are three large sundecks with a 11m x 6m pool to relax around,and an external kitchen, all set in 1200m of garden with ample free & secure parking for all visitors.
And our lodge is just 8 minutes from the beautiful beach of Messanges, which is one of the best surf spots in France.

Meal Plan

All of the breakfasts  are prepared with fresh local products. Breakfast is a healthy continental buffet.
 You can help youreself to free tea and coffee all day long.
We have an exterior kitchen for your use. It is a basic kitchen with a gas BBQ, a charcoal BBQ ,a 4 ring gas burner hob, a microwave, fridge and a sink , so that you can enjoy a meal around the pool and don’t feel obliged to go out and eat every night.

Children

Children under 2 years old are free of charge. We can provide cots if needed.

Troy and Nelly have devoted there life’s to the beach and the snow,  with over 40 years of surfing, snowboarding , and skating experience, and as many years of catering and tourism. If you want guided surf trips for small summer waves, the notorious big wave  spots of France, or surfing Basque country reefs, we will arrange it for you.
We have a great selection of surf boards and wet-suits for hire, with the lowest rates around.

Best Period

For this week-end, anticyclones conditions on the Atlantic Coast, from the Manche (The English Channel) to the Gascogne Gulf. A depression system located in the English Islands (yes…again and always…) creates a long swell from West-north to West. A distance from 4 meters to 8’ on Brest and la Sifflante’s buoys provide a regular swell for the next 48 hours.

The wind is offshore, Force 1 on the Beaufort scale (1-3 mph), half rising tide, Coefficient 85, water temperature 19° Celsius degrees, Air temperature 23°.
You slip your waxy surfboard into the tilted passenger seat, you ride your moped or bicycle, and you drop family, girlfriend and friends. Destination = the beach…

Who has one of the biggest Tow In waves on the Basque Coast ? Who do not think that La Nord, Guethary or La Palue compete with J-Bay, Sunset or Kirra ? Which surfer does not know that a few years ago, we were the country where most of the Tour Pro’s contests were taking place at ? Who invented the leash ?
If the Californian kids knew all that, we would get more respect at the Rincon peak or Malibu…besides, if someone could hand on the message to the Pros when trailers are coming every summer on our shores…
It is not easy to be the nation of gastronomy specialists, good wine and the world’s prettiest girls!

History

Les Tontons Surfers know it well; everything came from the movie theatre!
Starlets from Pieter Viertel’s movies have been the first to give the taste for surfing to our compatriots who watched them from the Basque coast’s heights. The great potential of our country was then revealed seasons after seasons, becoming the inevitable path for Australians and Americans heading down to Morocco in a VW van.
A few years later, the coast became Europe’s South California, thanks to the large amounts of worldwide known spots, and the rise of surfing is estimated by the set up of great surfing brands on the Aquitaine coast, as well as the many famous shapers who leave their finger-prints in the local workshops every end of seasons.

Geography

Since then, the surfing virus has taken the Northern path of the Aquitaine coast: the Landes and its beachbreaks on fire, the Gironde and the spots on the North and South of the spectacular Bassin d’Arcachon.
Higher, the Charentes Maritimes, Oléron and Ré’s islands, are propitious grounds of beautiful depression swells. Nowadays, the Vendée and the Pays de Loire have also spots with a great quality level and flirt with Brittany, generous land of surfing with a multiplicity of secret spots. Still up North, Normandy…the Cotentin…the Côte d’Opale…and even our Belgium waffles’ friends sometimes have some good sessions!
These past years, a great surfing land in the Mediterranean has been discovered, creeks and inlets from the Catalan region to the Italian border…Corsica’s land, where spots are as secrets as its population…And finally, soft water surfing, all the way on the Garonne’s coast in the incredible Mascaret…

Infos

FORMALITIES :
A surfboard in a good condition. A 3/2 mm wetsuit in winter, a boardshort in summer, and a little bit of wax.

LANGUAGE :
French. You have to hold your tongue not to reveal your secret spot.

HEALTH :
A quick jogging in the morning, some yoga at the end of the day. Some training before the session and some stretching on the way out. Be moderate on the good things and you should be fine !

TIME DIFFERENCES : After a couple of beers in the local café, a good glass of wine and some Gin & Kas late in discos, we may sometimes feel a little bit jet-lagged in the morning…

WEATHER :
It is rather hard when it is forecasted waves all day long and when you are stuck in traffic between 2 meetings…

DRIVING CONDITIONS :
All at the same price = shaky van, dyed and over waxed Renault break, noisy mopeds, bicycles or both legs to catch up the bus heading to the beach.

ENVIRONMENT :
Some consideration for the beaches and the ocean. Keep the fag-end of your cigarette in your short’s pockets, your wax’s wrapping papers in the bottom of your girlfriend’s bag and wait until you are up on the sand-hill to get rid of your picnic leftovers…

WATER/ELECTRICITY:
Salty water in priority. Avoid surfing in a stormy weather.
