Best Period
The Dominican Republic’s Northern coast called « La Costa » gets the swell right away from the Northern Atlantic from November to March. Depressions off Florida generate waves going from 0.50 to 3 meters, even sometimes up to 15’, twice or three times a year.
From May to September, you can surf on the Caribbean coast in the South of the island because the North coast only gets a little swell.
Locals are friendly and not too many around the spots.
The country provides a good amount of spots over fifty kilometres or so. You can imagine how great surfing can be in Haiti, but unfortunately it has been advised against, those past few years.
WINDS & TIDES
The N/NE dominating winds strongly blow all year long. Fortunately, the spots near Sosua and Cabarete often remain offshore. Morning sessions or at the sunset are advised. Gorgeous white sandy beaches with rocky creeks are sprinkled along the North coast. The bottom is mainly coral.
Spots
Cabarete : Many right and left spots at the entrance and the end of the town. A large reef blocking the surfing conditions in the bay. It is more for funboarders and kitesurfers.
La Isquierda : A tubular wave. 2 sections that join in a long and powerful wave. Perfect in N N/W swells. Careful to the reef at low tide.
La Derecha : One of the best spot on the North coast of the island. 2 peaks with regular waves? A reefbreak breaking more like a point break. Hold big size. Long lefts to the shore.
Bobo's Point : Easy peaks and mellow waves. Good for beginners . Works on N/E swell. Left & right waves.
Coco Pipe : The Domenican pipe ! A powerful and hollow reef break. Perfect at high tide. Start working at 4 ft and hold big swell. Rights and lefts on a shalow reef at low tide.
Playa Goleta : Several peaks in Cabarete – Watch out for sea-urchins.
Gun Point : A right reaching up to 1.50 meters.
Yellow Rock Reef : Small sized left but fast one.
Yucca Bay : Many peaks of left and right in the bay.
Encuentro : The best wave of the island. Many people in the water when the swell comes around. An easy take-off on the right, then a fast section on a sand-bank. A left that provides powerful barrels on a coral bottom.
La Boca : Exposed to the « alizés » - A consistent beachbreak working well in calm wind.
La Bahia : Near the town of Sosua. In heavy Northern swells, an impressive left – Long wall to ride.
La Puntilla : Near the colonial fort of Puerto Plata. 35 km from Cabarete. Urban and nice spot. Lefts and rights that work in heavy Northern swell.
Playa Grande : 15 min from Rio San Juan and an hour away from Cabarete. A gorgeous white sandy bay – Not many people in the water because there are many peaks.
Long and powerful rights turning into a nice and fast shorebreak.
La Preciosa : Next Playa Grande. A consistent wave with an amazing view point to take pictures of.
More on the East part, coming down towards Samana, some secret spots but often less consistent ones.
The region is beautiful and rather wild. It just needs to be explored…

Surf Story
Ay Muchacho ! What an ambience ! A Latin American touch and a good amount of the Caribbean atmosphere : here comes the explosive cocktail of Dominican Republic.
The North coast is full of turquoise water spots and quite easily reachable : Cabarete, Playa Grande and Sosua. And every night, listening to salsa and merengue music, you move and dance, a little thanks to the Cuba Libre and to the smiles of the Dominicans…
History
The first inhabitants of the island were the Lucayos, Ciguayos, Tainos and Caribes, fishermen and farmers communities. In December 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived on the island of Quisqueya and named itEspañola. In 1697, a part of the island was conquest by the French.
In 1795, the city of Santo Domingo was given up to France.
In 1821, the colonial paymaster, José Nuñez de Cáceres, declared the independence of Santo Domingo and in 1822, the Haitians invaded and occupied the colony for 22 years until the Independence of the country was proclaimed. After many years under dictatorship, civil war and American domination, the Dominican Republic was ruled for 30 years (1930-1961) by Rafael Trujillo.
Geography
The Dominican Republic is located in the archipelago of the Caribbean. It shares with Haiti the Hispaniola Island and constitutes on its own the two third of the island in the East.
A 388 km border divides both countries.
In the North, the Northern Cordillera follows the coastal plain that hugs the Atlantic. The central Cordillera is located in the centre of the island: el Pico Duero, highest mountain of the Caribbean is 3 175 m high. Plains and hills dominate in the East.
Its landscapes include forests, mountains, valleys, plains and plateaus at the same time.Beautiful beaches on the sides of the mountains are located in the North, Southeast and East of the coasts.
Old areas of the capital of Santo Domingo have been rehabilitated and carefully restored in order to preserve their colonial charm. The modern zones include a prosperous harbour city with night clubs and casinos. The traditional Dominican cuisine mix Spanish influences and local products. The local meals are the bandera (white rice, red beans, cooked meat, salad and fried banana) and the cassava (fried potato-like vegetable)
The beer is locally produced, as rum, and they are both rather cheap. The national music, the Merengue, is played in several festivals and attracts many national and international musicians.
