Spots Type
Our Surf trip accomodation are steps from the most consistent and perfect wave in Costa Rica : Playa Negra…
an wave that works on all tides and is still breaks even with onshore
winds.
Every other wave in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica is fickle
and dependent on particular tide and wind conditions.
There are about 17 surf-spots close to Playa Negra, many spots are perfect — lonely waves that go unridden… Playa Negra is an old coral volcanic reef break that is a perfect reeling right.
All around Playa Negra are amazing spots, many still are not surfed.
At
high tide, Playa Negra is an easy wave with a dry-hair paddle out. At
this tide it is common to see 20-30 surfers out — many being beginner surfers.
At low tide a slamming barrel forms over a shallow reef leading to a
ramp section. The paddle out (rock dance) at this tide looks frightening
to beginner surfers (but is basic). At this tide and especially with a
little onshore wind it is uncommon to see more than a few surfers taking
advantage of these amazing waves.
Spots
With some of the most consistent waves and surf breaks in the region
Playa Negra is an incredible surf spot in the northwestern region of
Guanacaste. This dark sand beach holds a reef break making it ideal for
the beginner surfer
as well as the expert surfer.
The pristine beaches of Playa Negra are
dark-colored and rocky in many parts. For sun-bathing and swimming there
is a stretch of sandy, protected beach some 100m south of the famous
break.
Playa Negra is unique in that it breaks on all tides, picks up most
all swell directions and holds almost any swell. It is the area’s swell
magnet, therefore super consistent. Conversely, Playa Negra is the first
to pick up swells and hold them the longest, a surfer’s dream.
Playa Negra may be a little harder to get to, and in some cases even
find — by driving through local dirt roads without directional signs but
worth the adventure, but dont worry, you are with us. Plus, we are
strategically poised to go explore some of the lesser-known spots that
will go nameless. Let’s just say they are close by and no one wants to
show you where they are.
Weather / Temperature
Air temperature : 30°C (Summer) / 27°C (Winter)
Water temperature : 25°C (Summer) / 24°C (Winter)
Wave Level
Morning winds are light offshore and there are many surf breaks (some
of the best in the world) with plenty of perfect peaks to choose from.
The beach breaks only work with favorable wind conditions so we tend to
focus on these spots during mornings, when the wind is good.
One spot in
particular faces south and is open to a lot of swell and wind making it
one of the most fickle spots on the coast, but when it’s on it’s ON!.
It can get crowded out but there are a lot of peaks to choose from.
There are numerous other breaks that are rarely surfed, except by us— people just don’t know about them.
Every variance in swell angle opens new possibilities in where we
surf. We have reef breaks for every swell angle and condition, from a
wave very similar to Playa Negra (never seen more than 6 surfers out
there) to outer reefs reminiscent of the Eastside of Oahu, to a perfect
A-frame reef setup that comes to life when the swell is too far south
for Negra- only 5 minutes from our location).
Surf Story
Many American champions have been on its shores, immortalized in Endless Summer II : the witch rock, Tamarindo and its beachbreaks, wild beaches of Guanacaste and many more exotic spots.
A paradise for ecotourism, surftrips looking for all kind of waves on the beaches often deserted, in a Latino atmosphere and a completely safe country.
History
« Pura Vida! » This fetish expression from Costa Rica best describes this country overflowing of life in every way.
The “Ticos” kindness and their warmness is nothing compared to the huge wealth of nature.
Going to Costa Rica, first is going on a trip to act like Indiana Jones within a true wild paradise! A paradise that have everything at the same time: dreamy beaches and high summits, the thicker forest and moon-like bushes, underwater bottoms worthy the most beautiful fish tanks and huge breathe taking forests, inextricable mangroves and two oceans with impressive waves…
The whole is packed into a tiny territory of barely 51 000 km². But Costa Rica is especially about meeting people, an open-minded population, sensitive and welcoming…A country that have given away its army to first take care of health and education and did not wait for the growth of the lasting development. A place where it is easy to be a happy and pleased traveller-surfer !
Geography
Demarcated by Nicaragua in the North and Panama in the South, Costa Rica hugs the Caribbean Sea in the East and the Pacific Ocean in the West.
A volcanic chain splits the country, from the Nicaraguan frontier in the Northwest to the Panaman frontier in the Southeast.
A high plateau divides the American cordilleras in the centre, bordered with low coastal lands in the East and in the West.
More of half of the population live in this plain, with a volcanic fertile soil. Mangroves, marshlands and sandy beaches characterize the Caribbean coast, 212 long. More cut and rocky, the Pacific coast spreads out 1 016 km, dotted by gulfs and peninsulas.
