Best Period
Located down the arch of the Antilles, facing South America, the island gets Southern or NW swells migrating towards the Caribbean. The tropical depressions turn around this zone during the wet season.
The best time goes from the end of October to March. The East coast gets average waves from 0.50 to 3 meters with propitious winds. The West coast is often more consistent but sometimes onshore and the Southern coast gets an unequalled swell, caught by the tropical storms. It is easier for beginners.
WINDS & TIDES
The N/W dominating winds provide a regular surfing and sometimes very consistent. Barbados is located away from the hurricanes because it is located South of the hurricane zone.
There are barely changing tides.
The atmosphere in the water is relaxed even though there are not many people in the water on the famous spots. Some Rasta surfers are less cool than their belief but you can surf without any problems.
Most spots are beachbreaks on coral flat stones and long white sandy strips.
Spots
Bathsheba – Soup Bowl : this is the best spot of the Eastern coast. The famous spot of the island is there.
A regular and hollow wave with many peaks – Respect the locals and watch out for sea-urchins on the inside.
Sand Bank : 10 min North from Soup Bowl – Easy spot – Perfect for beginners.
Parlor’s : Kind of like Soup Bowl – Works in heavy swell.
Tent Bay : A solid left well tubing in Northern swell.
Ragged Point : An amazong view point – Easy and fun beachbreak.
Silver Sands : Located on the beach of the Mistral Club. Perfect for beginners. Easy beachbreak 20 m away from the shore, sandy bottom.
South Point : Near the lighthouse of the Southern point of the island. A beautiful left that can be tougher for trained surfers. Good for beginners in little swell.
Freights Bay : Safe and protected. Good for beginners – Sheltered from the wind and the currents in the bay. Sandy bottom. Fun for trained surfers in heavy days or in onshore conditions on the other coast.
Long Beach & Kayakers Point : Good in little swell. Easy and fun beachbreak when the other side is rough and onshore.
Sandy Lane : On the West coast – only works in Northern consistent swell – A left that can turn out perfect
Maycocks : A long and fun right, in spite of the conditions often onshore on the West coast.
Weather / Temperature
Air temperature : 28°C (Summer) / 27°C (Winter)
Water temperature : 24°C (Summer) / 25°C (Winter)
Surf Story
South of the arch of the Antilles. 350 km from Venezuela, tropical and Rasta atmosphere on this little paradise for billionaires.
A perfect exploration by boat or along the quite roads of this small island, in the reggae emanations.
A nice regular swell near Bathsheba : Soup Bowls, Tent Bay or Sandy Lane, pink sandy beaches and a tropical vegetation if you want a change from the most famous islands of the Antilles.
History
The Spanish arrived on the island in 1563. The first inhabitants were the Arawak Indians, indigenous people from the Pacific later expelled by the Caribe Indians. The Spanish used the island as a Caribbean supplies centre as they headed towards South.
The origin of the name of the island came from the sailors seeing the appearance of the island's fig trees whose long hanging aerial roots, and thought, they resembled beards.
In 1625, the coming of many British on the island and the launch of the can-sugar as the main culture caused the arrival of African slaves. Quickly, the British settle their costumes and Barbados received the name of “Little England”.
The Parliament settled on the island was the third most ancient of the British Community. The island was besieged several times until the surrender facing Cromwell’s forces in 1651.
Barbados unites with the Western Indies Federation in 1958 and gets an autonomous government three years later.
Barbados became an independent state in 1966.
A wealthy islet within an ocean of poverty.
Barbados is a rich country compared to its neighbours. It gets its wealth from a flourishing tourism industry and the can-sugar cultivation.
The political stability that lasts since the independence allowed it to attract the investments and so take advantage of its possibilities.
However the population fully comes from immigration and the African slave trade, and the social classification still remains accurate today.
Nearly 80% of the Barbadians are Black, 4% are White and 2.3% Mestizos.
A vast majority of the population of Barbados speaks Barbadian Creole English or Bajan, which is a Barbadian Creole made of an Anglo-American basis.
Geography
Barbados is the most Eastern island of the Caribbean.
It is located East of the small islands of the Antilles and North of Trinidad and Tobago.
The island is 34 km long and 23 km wide for a total area of 430 km.
Barbados is then one of the smallest countries of the world with Andorra.
They are 266 000 inhabitants and the national capital is Bridgetown.
The Western part of the island is bordered with thin sandy beach and coral reefs. All along the Eastern coast, the landscape is rockier.
The island includes plains and not really uneven, except in the hills up North of the island.
The platform and the coral reefs are a natural filter for the water which is one of the purest water of the world.
