Best Period

The best season is the austral winter from May to October, period of substantial swells and offshore winds on the coast near Sydney.
In the North, from December to March, the influence of Northeast’s tropical storms in the Coral Sea engenders steady waves from 0.6 to 2.50 meters. Some Antarctic storms coming from the Southeast also bring good conditions up to Australia’s 2 Northeast coasts.
The Sunshine Coast, a tropical area, is the most Northern part of the East Coast, before the great coral reef that prevents the swell to come near. The Gold Coast swings between the tropical and moderate climate.
This is the world’s most intense surf area with coasts gathering legendary surf spots.
WINDS & TIDES
On the Northeast coasts, the propitious winds blow in winter from May to August from Southeast to Southwest.
From January to April, they blow from East to South. September and October are northerly wind-driven and go onshore. Tides rise up to 2 meters. Check the surf spots according to the tides’ time-tables.
Bring booties along with you.

Spots

All around the surf camps there's a variety of incomparable spots.
Beach break, point break ... there is a wave for everyone !

The waves are accessible to all. Waves are uncrowdy and great surf conditions make it a perfect place to increase your surf level and have fun !

Weather / Temperature

Air temperature : 32°C (Summer) / 20°C (Winter)

Water temperature : 28°C (Summer) / 22°C (Winter)

Surf Story

A very ideal coastal territory : the East coast with well-known surf spots : Narabeen, Coolangata, Noosa, Kirra…
A cool atmosphere and wild landscapes within a relaxed mood. An incredible surf level, a variety of spots and always miles of different mountainous coasts.
In the South, the water is colder, waves are well-shaped and surfers are hardcore. This is the native land of Rip Curl and Billabong. The West coast is the Indian Ocean’s light and its wild reefs with waves breaking with no one around, just maybe some big prowling whites….

We are with our buddies, rugby and tubes stories, around an iced beer in the corner of a pub, never too far away from the surf spot.

History

White Australians are originally from Great Britain and Ireland. But since World War II, Greek and Italian communities have been emerging. And more recently, numbers of Asians have settled in Australia. Australia was first inhabited by the Indigenous Australians.

Throughout many centuries, they have been removed from their lands by white settlers, if not murdered. And the consequences of this genocide can still be seen today: Indigenous Australians are the racial group the most socially and economically deprived in the Australian society. Their life expectancy is 20 years lower than the Whites.
They take advantage of the disastrous and preconceived image of the indigenous man wandering the streets, drunk and sometimes stoned. If you can indeed meet people in this situation, most Aborigines are living in their community where alcohol consumption is forbidden or regulated.

Geography

Australia is the world’s biggest island but also the smallest continent. It is surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is extending over 4 000 km from West to East and 3 200 km from North to South. Its perimeter is 36735 km.
In the East, there is a coastal belt going from North to South that gathers the most beautiful beaches of the country, worthy of the Polynesian ones, especially facing the great coral reef! This is where the majority of the population is concentrated.
The West is composed of a plateau (mountains in the South) and a fertile coastal belt where the rest of the population is settled (particularly in Perth, on the side of the Indian Ocean).Until the East fringe of the country, lands are arid and desert. This is the Outback. Only some mountains are disturbing the quiet desert like the Mac Donnell Ranges.
States : The Australian Capital Territory (Canberra), New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia.

Infos

Formalities :
For tourism stay of less than 3 months, the Visa has been replaced by the electronic travel authority (ETA) for most Europeans. It will be delivered to you when you will get your plane ticket for 20 Australian Dollars.

Language :
The official language is of course English. However, many other languages are daily spoken (mostly Italian, Greek and Cantonese) which shows the country’s great melting-pot.
At the same time, Indigenous Australians have their own languages (about 300 languages, different according to the communities), the most used one is the kriol. Some of them are kept secret because they can not be discovered by the white man.

Health :
There is no danger in a matter of health in Australia. No vaccines are required to enter the country. However some unpleasant things can happen: the most serious ones are due to the climate, be careful to the hot weather and sunburns.

Time differences :
The country is divided in 3 zones :

- Eastern Standard Time (EST): GMT + 10H, for New South Wales, Canberra Territory, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland.
- Central Standard Time (CST): GMT + 9H30, in South Australia and in the Northern Territory.
- Western Standard Time (WST): GMT + 8H in Western Australia.

Weather :
Every season is great to travel in Australia. But be careful as everyone knows, Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere; seasons are reversed compared to ours.

Winter : from June to August
Spring : from September to November
Summer : from December to February
Fall : from March to May.

In general, it is very warm, from 30 to 40 Celsius degrees from November to March with cool nights in the South and a strong humidity in the North. From April to December, there is still a nice weather in the North and the Centre (this is the best season) and more fresh and humid in the South.

Driving conditions :
Driving left side of the road. The European driving license is necessary. Australia, because of its size, is a big scale country with great air and road infrastructures. Distances to cover being large, it seems difficult not to take the plane in Australia.

Environment :
Most Australians’ lifestyle looks like any other one from Western countries with American habits like barbecues on Sundays! English habits are also there: cricket, beer at the pub, school uniforms…Indigenous Australians have kept their costumes and traditional ceremonies which consist in protecting their holy places in order to let the spirits of the dead people wandering and protecting them.

Water/ Electricity :
220-240 V, 50 Hz. Outlets have three flat connections. You will need an adaptor for your electrical equipment.

Currency :
Australian dollar = 1€ = 1, 65 AU$.
Credit card is the best to use in a foreign country. Banks = important Australian banks = ANZ, Commonwealth, National and Westpac own branches in the whole country, with ATM machines opened 24 hours. MasterCard can be used anywhere, on the contrary not the American Express.
